A tagged object 70 includes a main body and number of coded particles 10 immobilized to the main body. Each coded particle has a miniature body that is configured to provide an optical emission pattern when illuminated, possibly by use of rare earth elements. The tagged object 70 may be a proppant and the coded particle may be immobilized to the main body by a tether (84, fig 8). In a method of oilfield monitoring different types of tagged objects are disposed in different locations. An event may trigger release of one of the different types of tagged objects which are then identified by unique optical emission patterns.
