PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare gas discharge lamp device in which there is no reduction in light-emitting efficiency and no occurrence of flickerings even if a lamp is dimmed in a situation of remarkable changes of environmental temperature such as the case of using in outdoor environment. SOLUTION : The discharge lamp device is constituted of : the rare gas discharge lamp in which a pair of electrodes 2 are arranged on the outer face of a discharge container 1 where xenon gas is filled; and a power feeding device having a function of dimming and controlling the rare gas discharge lamp by supplying variable electric power to this rare gas discharge lamp. When a distance between the electrodes is denoted by L (mm), one electrode area is denoted by S (mm2) and electric power of the rare gas discharge lamp is denoted by P (w), a relation of P (w)/S (mm2)>6.8×10-4×L (mm)-1.3×10-3 is satisfied.
