PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a transparent zirconia- or hafnia-based ceramic which is more excellent in optical characteristics than the conventional transparent ceramic and can provide a molding or structure that is difficult to attain by a single crystal. SOLUTION : This invention relates to a transparent ceramic and its producing method in which the transparent ceramic is a zirconia- or hafnia-based ceramic stabilized by at least one kind of stabilizing materials among Y2O3, Sc2O3, MgO, CaO and an oxide of a lanthanide rare earth metal, and which is characterized in that (1) the crystal structure of the zirconia- or hafnia-based ceramic is cubic, (2) the average particle diameter of the crystal is in a range of 5-300 μm, and (3) it contains fluorine element.
