PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for collecting valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, and rare earth metals, from scraps of waste nickel-hydrogen secondary cells, with ease, at low cost, and in high purity. SOLUTION : The method for collecting valuable metals comprises steps of collecting valuables from scraps containing valuable metals, and decarbonizing by heating the collected valuables in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The carbon content in the valuable metals can be reduced without oxidizing the valuable metals, through the decarbonizing process for valuable substances to be collected containing comparatively pure carbon and oxygen. Stirring in the decarbonization process further improves efficiency. Inert gas, hydrogen gas, steam, or mixture thereof is preferably employed for the non-oxidizing atmosphere.
