Disclosed is an aluminate phosphor represented by the following general formula : (CexTb1-x)2O3·y(Mg1-zMnz)O·nAl2O3 (wherein x, y, z and n represent numbers satisfying the following relations : when 0 < x < 1, 0.6 ≤ y ≤ 1.8, 0 ≤ z ≤ 1 and 7 ≤ n, or alternatively when x = 1, 0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.8, 0.1 ≤ z ≤ 1 and 7 ≤ n). The aluminate phosphor has significantly improved luminance and a significantly shortened 1/10 afterglow time when compared with conventional phosphors. In addition, the aluminate phosphor can reduce the use of Tb which is a rare element. The phosphor is suitably used for fluorescent lamps for illumination or backlight lamps. In particular, a liquid crystal display device having excellent moving picture characteristics can be provided by using a phosphor having a short 1/10 afterglow time as a backlight lamp and making the phosphor emit light intermittently.
