PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method enabling the manufacture of an organic EL element that can be driven by a low voltage, by using a few materials and in a simple and convenient method by which a large-scale device and heat treatment at a high temperature adversely affecting the element are not required. SOLUTION : In the method of manufacturing the organic EL element, at least a light-emitting layer, an electron injection layer and a cathode are laminated on an anode in this order. The method includes a step of forming the electron injection layer by a wet process using a coating liquid for forming the electron injection layer. The coating liquid includes : a metal compound capable of releasing at least one metal ion selected from an alkali metal ion, an alkaline earth metal ion and a rare earth metal ion in the coating liquid; and an organic solvent capable of dissolving the metal compound at normal temperature.
