PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery with excellent discharge capacity, rate characteristics, and cycle characteristics. SOLUTION : The negative electrode material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains amorphous alloy of a nonstoichiometric composition expressed by R3M1xM2y, wherein R is rare earth element, M1 is at least one element selected from Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Mn, M2 is at least one element selected from Sn, Sb and Si and reacting with Li, 1.5≤x≤3.0, 8.0≤y≤10.0.
