PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for reducing glycerol, which obtains reduced glycerol compounds composed of 1, 2-propanediol, 1, 3-propanediol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol by reducing glycerol in a high yield and a catalyst used for the method.
SOLUTION : The method for reducing glycerol comprises reducing glycerol in the presence of hydrogen, a carrier supporting Ir and one or more metal elements selected from Re, Mo, and W in a reaction system to improve selectivity of 1-propanol and/or 1, 3-propanediol. The catalyst for reducing glycerol comprises the carrier, Ir supported on the carrier and one or more of metal elements selected from Re, Mo, and W.
