PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a discharge lamp high in luminous efficiency by reducing influence of the light shielding of metal halide. SOLUTION : This discharge lamp is provided with : an airtight vessel 1 having a light emitting part 11 with a discharge space 13 formed in the inside, and a sealing part 12 formed at an end of the light emitting part 11; a discharge medium containing the metal halide 2 and a rare gas filled in the discharge space 13; and a pair of electrodes 32 having one end sealed to the sealing part 12 and the other end arranged oppositely to the discharge space 11; and lit with the tube axis thereof set in a horizontal state. When it is assumed that the upper side of the light emitting part 11 is an upper half part 1a and the lower side thereof is a lower half part 1b in a cross section of the light emitting part 11 vertical to the tube axis, on both sides of the lowest part 1b1 located on the lowest side within the lower half part 1b, thin parts 1b2 each having a small thickness relative to the lowest part 1b1 are formed.
