Magnesium alloy comprises : aluminum (1-9 wt.%); zinc (0.6-6 wt.%); manganese (0.1-2 wt.%); rare earth elements (0-2 wt.%); and copper (0.5-2 wt.%), where the weight ratio of aluminum to zinc is 1 : 1-2 : 1. An independent claim is included for preparing the magnesium alloy, comprising melting impure magnesium scrap and copper containing precursors and alloying by adjusting the concentration of the components.
