PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas sensor element and a gas sensor which are difficult to be damaged even when receiving stress and impact. SOLUTION : The gas sensor element includes a solid electrolyte, and a pair of electrodes arranged to hold the solid electrolyte therebetween. The pair of electrodes includes a measuring electrode in contact with a measuring object gas, and a reference electrode in contact with a reference gas. The reference electrode includes a multilayer construction in which a reaction prevention layer 31 and an electrode layer 32 are stacked in the order closer to the solid electrolyte. Each of the reaction prevention layer and the electrode layer includes a conductive oxide layer containing rare-earth-added ceria and perovskite phase. Rare-earth in the rare-earth-added ceria contained in the reaction prevention layer is one or more types selected from a group consisting of Gd, Y, Yb, Sm, La and Nd. A ration of rare-earth in the rare-earth-added ceria contained in the reaction prevention layer is 24 to 50 mol%. SELECTED DRAWING : Figure 4 COPYRIGHT : (C)2019, JPO&INPIT
