FIELD : metallurgy. SUBSTANCE : invention relates to ferrous metallurgy, namely to making of rail steel. Steel contains carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, vanadium, aluminium, nitrogen, molybdenum, nickel, boron, one of the elements selected from the group including niobium and titanium, one or several elements selected from the group including rare-earth metals, zirconium, strontium, calcium and barium, iron and impurities with the following ratio of the components, wt % : carbon 0.25 - 0.37, silicon from 0.90 to 1.0 maximum, manganese from 1.29 minimum to 1.50 maximum, chromium 1.00 - 1.40, vanadium 0.08 - 0.15, aluminium 0.005 maximum, nitrogen 0.012 - 0.020, molybdenum from 0.10 to 0.20 maximum, nickel 0.01 - 0.30, boron 0.0003 - 0.002, one or several elements, selected from the group including rare-earth metals, zirconium, strontium, calcium and barium in the amount of 0.0005 - 0.005 each, one of the elements, selected from the group including niobium and titanium : niobium 0.003 - 0.05, titanium 0.001 - 0.02, the rest is iron and additives. The additives in steel are sulphur 0.015 maximum, phosphorus 0.020 maximum and copper 0.020 maximum. EFFECT : well-balanced complex of mechanical properties of steel and improved service durability of the rails. 2 tbl
