PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a medicament inhibiting or preventing the formation of kidney stones by its binding to an oxalate.
SOLUTION : Conditions such as kidney stones, which are characterized by undesired absorption of an oxalate from the intestinal tract, are conveniently treated using nontoxic salts of rare earth metal ions. A method is for controlling, preventing, or treating subjects who are at risk for or who exhibit symptoms of oxalate deposits in the kidneys, i.e., kidney stones, through the oral administration of rare earth salts, e.g. lanthanum salts, with high affinity oxalate binding properties. Preferred rare earth salts are those of yttrium, lanthanum and cerium.
