PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen storage alloy having output characteristics greatly exceeding a conventional range by specifying the alloy structure of the hydrogen storage alloy, particularly, a A-component element, and to provide an alkaline battery using the same as a negative electrode active material.
SOLUTION : The hydrogen storage alloy includes an A-component consisting of a rare earth element represented by Ln, and magnesium, and a B-component consisting of an element including at least nickel and aluminum. The hydrogen storage alloy has a main alloy phase of a A5B19 type structure, and its general formula is represented by Ln1-xMgxNiy-a-bAlaMb where M is at least one type element selected from Co, Mn, and Zn, 0.1≤x≤0.2, 3.6≤y≤3.9, 0.1≤a≤0.2, and 0≤b≤0.1. The rare earth element Ln consists of maximum two elements including at least La, and stored hydrogen equilibrium pressure (Pa) is 0.03-0.17 MPa when a hydrogen storage amount H/M (an atomic ratio) is 0.5 at 40°C.
