The optical fiber comprises a core made of rare earth ion doped silica based material, an optical cladding overlying the core, and nanoparticles (2) dispersed in the core material (3). The nanoparticles have a size of = 20 nm, which is smaller than the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation (1) for excitation, and are made of a metal core containing rare earth ions and covered with a dielectric material layer. An independent claim is included for a process for the fabrication of an optical fiber.
