A method of recovering rare earth elements from a composition containing rare earth fluorides, characterized in that (1) hydrochloric acid, silicon oxide and a composition containing rare earth fluorides are mixed together, (2) the mixture is heated to thereby attain dissolution of the rare earth fluorides, (3) insoluble matter is removed from the liquid obtained in the step (2) to thereby obtain a rare earth solution and (4) rare earth elements are recovered from the rare earth solution obtained in the step (3).
