PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a surface coated silicon nitride base sintered compact having a corrosion resistant coating layer whose adhesive strength is high even used in high temperature region such as about 800-1, 600 deg.C. SOLUTION : The surface coated silicon nitride base sintered compact is characterized in that it is composed of a base material of the silicon nitride base sintered compact and a coating layer formed on the base material. The coating layer is composed of a crystal of RE2Si2O7 and/or RE2Si2O5 (RE is rare earth element), the mean grain diameter of the crystal is >=1 μm, and excessive SiO2 is <=10 mol%.
