PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method, in particular, a continuous method, for manufacturing nano to micrometer-scale particles of a rare earth metal compound or another transition metal compound, which can cope with a long-sustained operation and in which a product can be produced in comparatively higher yield. SOLUTION : The method for manufacturing nano to micrometer-scale particles of the rare earth metal compound or the transition metal compound by forming uniform precipitates from a metal salt solution of at least one corresponding rare earth metal or transition metal by using one or more precipitating reagents is characterized in that one or more weakly basic compounds, each of which is soluble in a solvent or a mixture of solvents and stable at the treatment temperature, are used as the precipitating reagents and the precipitating work is done under a hydrothermal condition.
