PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To solve the problems that a practical magnesium alloy having sufficient corrosion resistance is not obtained by a conventional technology although a method for covering the surface of the alloy with an oxide is applied in order to enhance the corrosion resistance of the practical magnesium alloy, the environment load is large because an harmful substance is used or the like, the performance of the alloy is deteriorated by recycling, and an acceptable method for treating waste materials is not found.
SOLUTION : A magnesium alloy having good corrosion resistance is obtained by forming an oxide layer containing both elements of magnesium and a rare earth metal on the surface of a magnesium alloy to be treated. The oxide layer is formed by dipping the magnesium alloy to be treated in an aqueous solution containing both components of magnesium nitrate and a nitrate of a rare earth metal. In such method, no harmful component is used, the environment load is small, the recyclability is also good, waste materials can be treated without any problem, and reutilization is also possible.
