PURPOSE : A method and an apparatus for concentrating glycyrrhizin from a glycyrrhiza extract are provided to increase the content of glycyrrhizin, which is a target material, by removing inorganic materials, lime, starch, rubber, and fibrous chips from a hot water extract of the glycyrrhiza.CONSTITUTION : A method for concentrating glycyrrhizin from a glycyrrhiza extract comprises the steps of : (a) adding 5-50 parts by weight of water to 1 part by weight of the glycyrrhiza extract to obtain a diluted material; (b) adding 10-100 parts by weight of the diluted material to obtain an alcohol diluted material; (c) centrifuging the alcohol-diluted material with the rotating speed of 1, 000-4, 000 per minute so as to remove starch and rubber and isolate supernatant therefrom; (d) distilling alcohol from the supernatant to obtain an evaporation remnant; (e) adding 5-50 parts by weight of water to 1 part of the evaporation remnant to obtain a diluted material; (f) isolating a fraction from the diluted material obtained from the step(e) by filtering it through an isolation membrane having an ultrafiltration membrane or a microfiltration membrane; and (g) removing moisture from the fraction. An apparatus for concentrating glycyrrhizin from a glycyrrhiza extract comprises a dilution tank for diluting the glycyrrhiza extract with water; an agitation tank connected to the dilution tank and mixing a diluted material with alcohol; a centrifugal separator connected to the agitation tank and centrifuging an alcohol-diluted material; a distiller for distilling alcohol from supernatant obtained from the centrifugal separator; a re-dilution tank connected to the distiller and diluting an evaporation remnant obtained from the distiller with water; a separation membrane connected to the re-dilution tank and isolating glycyrrhizin from a diluted material obtained from the re-dilution tank; and a concentrator connected to the separation membrane and concentrating a fraction obtained from the separation membrane.?
