A particulate inorganic oxide comprising aluminum oxide, a metal oxide which does not form any double oxide with aluminum oxide, and at least one additional element selected from the group consisting of rare earth elements and alkaline earth elements, wherein the aluminum oxide content is 48 to 92at% in terms of element based on the total amount of aluminum contained in the aluminum oxide, metal element contained in the metal oxide, and the additional element; at least 80% of the primary particles of the inorganic oxide have particle sizes of 100nm or below; at least part of the primary particles have surface enriched regions having locally enhanced contents of the additional element in the surface layer; and the content of the additional element in the regions is 0.06 to 0.98% by mass in terms of oxide based on the whole amount of the inorganic oxide.
