PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a negative electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte solution secondary battery capable of obtaining a nonaqueous electrolyte solution secondary battery having high capacity, and excellent charge/ discharge characteristics and cycle life characteristics, and a nonaqueous electrolyte solution secondary battery using the negative electrode active material. SOLUTION : The negative electrode active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte solution secondary battery consists either of an intermetallic compound with a constituent ratio expressed in LiaXbSn (provided; X is a rare-earth element, 0.2≤a≤3.5, 0.1≤b≤0.5) or an intermetallic compound with a constituent ratio expressed in LiaYbSn (provided; Y is an alkaline-earth metal, 0.2≤a≤3.5, 0.1≤b≤0.5).
