PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a negative electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery excellent in initial charge-discharge efficiency, capable of restraining cycle deterioration caused by charge and discharge to realize discharge capacity remarkably exceeding theoretical capacity of a graphite-based carbon material, and excellent in both the initial charge-discharge efficiency and the cycle deterioration; to provide an active material used for the negative electrode and its manufacturing method; and to provide a lithium ion secondary battery provided with the negative electrode. SOLUTION : This negative electrode active material contains oxides of two or more kinds of rare-earth metals selected from a group comprising elements from La to Lu in the lanthanoid series including Y and Sc, and Sn, contains 0.7-6 mass% of oxygen, and has lithium absorbing-releasing power.
