PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a Raman amplifier wherein an excitation light source stably operates upon the minimum gain and a wide gain variable range can be obtained. SOLUTION : The excitation light source 1a outputs excitation light for performing Raman amplification of signal light passing through an amplification medium 2. An excitation light introducing means 1b introduces excitation light outputted from the excitation light source 1a to the amplification medium 2. A rare earth added optical fiber 1c is inserted between the excitation light source 1a and the excitation light introducing means 1b. The rare earth added optical fiber 1c has such a characteristic that the lower the excitation light power of the excitation light of the excitation light source 1a is, the larger the excitation light absorbing quantity is, and the higher the excitation light power of the excitation light of the excitation light source 1a is, the smaller the excitation light absorbing quantity is. Thereby, when the excitation light power of the excitation light outputted from the excitation light source 1a is made low, excitation light absorbing quantity of the rare earth added optical fiber 1c is made large, and the excitation light source 1a stably operates upon the minimum gain and a wide gain variable range can be obtained in the Raman amplifier 1.
