PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new surface modification method, in which since, e.g., in the case an austenitic stainless steel is subjected to low temperature carburizing, dislocations on a nanodimensional level are introduced into crystal grains and are retained therein, which employs this dislocations to the high temperature durability of the stock, and to provide a metallic member subjected to this method. SOLUTION : The material to be treated is subjected to low temperature carburizing treatment or carbonitriding treatment, and is subjected to pseudo-sensitization treatment with interstitial atom induced dislocations largely generated in the crystal grains as the production nuclei of carbide or nitride. Finally, chromium carbide or chromium nitride is finely and uniformly made to appear at the surface layer part of the cross section in the material to be treated, and surface hardening and covering effect in the material to be treated are attained, so as to improve the high temperature wear resistance of the material to be treated. Further, in the case of dealing with a chromium-depleted layer inevitably formed by the pseudo-sensitization treatment, reverse-diffusion treatment or addition treatment of introducing rare earth metal is performed, so as to improve its high temperature oxidation resistance. As a result, the high temperature durability of the material to be treated is exceedingly improved. COPYRIGHT : (C)2008, JPO&INPIT
