Provided is a positive electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, which is obtained using a transition metal compound that enables utilization of a redox reaction with use of a small amount of a rare metal, and which has high capacity and enables stable charge and discharge, while being not susceptible to the generation of oxygen. This positive electrode material for sodium ion secondary batteries, which are nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, contains a composite. This composite contains a transition metal compound and a sodium compound containing oxygen. The ratio of the substance quantity B of sodium in the sodium compound to the substance quantity A of the transition metal in the transition metal oxide, namely B/A is 0.5 to 3.0. The sodium compound and the transition metal oxide are, for example, in the form of particles having a particle diameter of 100 nm to 3 μm. The sodium compound is, for example, sodium peroxide. The transition metal in the transition metal oxide is, for example, at least one element selected from among Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, V and Cr.
