PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To achieve more oscillation wavelengths in a fiber laser exciting a fiber having a core to which a rare earth element ion is added with a laser diode to generate laser beams. SOLUTION : A GaN-based laser diode 11 excites the fiber 13 having a core to which Sm3+ is added. Laser beams 15 are generated by the transition of 4G5/2 → 6H5/2, 4G5/2 → 6H7/2, or 4F3/2 → 6H11/2 in the fiber 13. COPYRIGHT : (C)2008, JPO&INPIT
