The present invention relates to the use of persistent luminescence nanoparticles, functionalised if necessary, as a diagnostic agent for in vivo optical imaging, said nanoparticles being aluminate with a compound comprising at least one metal oxide, said compound being doped with at least one rare earth ion, and optionally with at least one transition metal ion. Preferably, the diagnostic agent is for imaging the vasculature of the body or reticulo-endothelial organs (liver, spleen).
