PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain an Sm2Co17-based sintered rare-earth magnet that will not cause hydrogen embrittlement, even if the magnet is used in a hydrogen atmosphere for a long time and can be used for a motor, etc., and to obtain a method of manufacturing the magnet. SOLUTION : The sintered rear-earth magnet is composed of 20-30 wt.% R (R : Sm or two or more kinds of rare-earth elements containing Sm at a rate of >=50 wt.%), 10-45 wt.% Fe, 1-10 wt.% Cu, 0.5-5 wt.% ZrO, and the balance Co and inevitable impurities. The magnet has a composite structure layer containing the Co and/or Sm2O3 and/or CoFe2O4 in the Co and Fe on its surface.
