A mud material which can produce SiC bonds while minimizing an excess or deficiency in material and is satisfactory in ease of hole formation. It includes fine-particle ingredients having a particle diameter of 75 µm or smaller, which comprise three ingredients, i.e., a silicon nitride-based material, a carbonaceous material, and pyrophillite, or comprise the three ingredients and at least one member selected among an aluminous material, silicon carbide-based material, material based on the oxide of a rare earth element, clay, high-purity siliceous material having an SiO2 content of 80 mass% or higher, boron compound-based material the amount of which is less than 0.3 mass% based on the silicon nitride-based material, and metal powder the amount of which is less than 10 mass% based on the carbonaceous material. The former three fine-particle ingredients are composed of 51-74 mass% the silicon nitride-based material, 15-35 mass% the carbonaceous material, and 10-30 mass% the pyrophillite.
