PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for manufacturing an article protected by a strong coating system exhibiting excellent ability working as a barrier with respect to a harmful environment derivation species such as vapor in an economical and reproducible mode. SOLUTION : A mixture including rare-earth aminosilicate is used for a self-sealing and substantially hermetic sealing layer 210 disposed over a substrate 202 and a bondcoat 204. The substrate may be any heat-resistant material, including, for instance, silicon-bearing ceramics and ceramic matrix composites. A process for disposing the self-sealing layer over the substrate, and heating the sealing layer to a sealing temperature at which at least a portion of the sealing layer will flow is adopted.
