PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal production method for producing an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a rare earth metal (particularly Ca metal) by an electrolytic method, and a metal production apparatus used for carrying out the method. SOLUTION : Electrolysis is performed while circulating an electrolytic bath 12 at the side of a cathode 11 in an electrolytic cell 10. In order to extract the metal while continuing electrolysis, the electrolytic bath at the side of the cathode is introduced into an adjusting tank 15 for adjusting the metal concentration in the electrolytic bath, a necessary concentration of the metal 18 is extracted from the adjusting tank 15, and the electrolytic bath 20 is returned into the electrolytic cell. Preferably, an electrolytic flow cell capable of carrying out electrolysis while flowing the electrolytic bath in the vicinity of the surface of the cathode in one direction. The method can be carried out using the metal production apparatus including the electrolytic cell, a circulating path 13 for circulating the electrolytic bath at the side of the cathode and the adjusting tank.
