PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain an applied type magnetic recording medium of a multilayer structure having excellent surface smoothness, strength, magnetic characteristics and weather resistance. SOLUTION : In the applied type magnetic recording medium of the multilayer structure wherein a magnetic layer formed by dispersing magnetic powder in a resin based binder is formed on a support via a non-magnetic layer formed by dispersing non-magnetic powder in a resin based binder, the magnetic powder is composed of an acicular ferromagnetic metal powder containing >5 at.% and ≤50 at.% Co, 0.1 to 30 at.% Al, 0.1 to 10 at% rare earth element (including Y), ≤0.05 wt.% element of group Ia in the periodic table and ≤0.1 wt.% (including 0 wt.%) element of group IIa in the periodic table in Fe and having 0.01 to 0.4 μm average major axis length and the non-magnetic powder is composed of acicular iron oxyhydroxide having 0.01 to 0.5 μm average major axis length, 40 to 150 m2/g specific surface area by a BET method and 50 to 150 ? crystal grain diameter.
