PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To restrain chemical reaction between rare earth metal and an electrode enclosed in a discharge container, and to significantly improve the lifetime of a HID (high-intensity discharge) lamp. SOLUTION : A center section of the high-intensity discharge lamp 3 becomes a light-emitting section 3a, and both end sections become sealed sections 3b. External electrodes 7, 8 of Nb made of a Nb lot or a one-side sealed pipe (boot) are maintained airtight on the sealed section 3b via a seal material 9 made of frit glass, and internal electrodes 10, 11 made of W (tungsten) or Mo (molybdenum) are welded to the external electrodes 7, 8. The surface of the external electrodes 7, 8 made of the Nb lot or the one-side sealed pipe (boot) are formed by a thin film 14, made of an oxide of rare-earth metal equivalent to rare earth metal halide enclosed in the light-emitting section 3a.
