This invention provides a rare earth-added core optical fiber comprising a core formed of a quartz glass containing at least aluminum and ytterbium, a clad provided on the periphery of the core and formed of a quartz glass having a lower refractive index than the core, and a polymer layer, having a lower refractive index than the clad, provided on the outer periphery of the clad. Aluminum and ytterbium are added to the core so that the increased amount TPD of photodarkening loss satisfies the following inequality (A). The rare earth-added core fiber can realize the production of an optical fiber laser which can maintain a satisfactory laser oscillation output even after long-term use. TPD ≥ 10{-0.655*(DAl)-4.304*exp{-0.00343*(AYb)}+1.274} (A)
