An optically active binaphthyl compound of the formula (1) : wherein R1 is a C1-6 alkyl group, an aryl group or an aryl C1-6 alkyl group, X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, R2 is a hydrogen atom, a C1-6 alkyl group, a C2-6 alkenyl group, a C2-6 alkynyl group or a halogen atom, each of L1 and L2 is a hydrogen atom, or L1 and L2 together form MY wherein M is a rare earth element or a Group 13 element, and Y is a C1-6 alkoxy group, a C1-6 alkylcarbonyloxy group or a halogen atom, and m is an integer of from 1 to 3.
