PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an external electrode rare gas discharge lamp lighting device with an inverter circuit in which excessive input current is prevented from flowing, which can be manufactured at low cost. SOLUTION : The external electrode rare gas discharge lamp lighting device comprises a direct-current power source 1, a transformer 2, a switching element 3 serially connected to the direct-current source 1 and a primary side of the transformer 2, an external electrode rare gas discharge lamp 4 connected to a secondary side of the transformer 2, and an oscillation circuit 6 outputting an oscillation signal to a control terminal of the switching element 3. The oscillation circuit 6 is operated by voltage supplied from the direct-current source 1, and outputs the oscillation signal obtained by a comparator operation of an operation amplifier, and control means 8, 9, controlling the output of the oscillation signal output from the oscillation circuit by synchronizing with a lamp ON/OFF signal inputted from outside, are arranged between the oscillation circuit 6 and the control terminal of the switching element 3.
