PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an organic electroluminescent element improved in luminous power conversion efficiency, maintained low in driving voltage and enhanced in lifetime characteristics even in a transparent conductive-material film having a cathode formed in a sputtered film and a display device.
SOLUTION : In the organic electroluminescent element, an anode, a luminous function layer and a light-transmitting cathode are laminated in this order. The organic electroluminescent element has an electron transport layer using an organic material shown in a general formula (1) between a light-emitting layer and the cathode. The cathode has a first layer containing an alkali metal element, a second group element or a rare earth element in a transparent conductive material. Where A in the general formula (1) represents a substitutional group having a phenanthroline skeleton or a benzoquinone skeleton, (n) represents a natural number of 2 or larger and B represents at least one kind selected from a benzene ring, the substitutional group having a terphenyl skeleton and a naphthalene ring. Where all A contain at least one of an alkyl group and an aryl group in the skeleton when B represents the benzene ring.
