A varistor element is provided to reduce a leakage current by increasing resistance in a grain boundary. A varistor element includes fired products. The fired product is formed by firing varistor material containing ZnO as a principal ingredient and a rare-earth element, that is, Co and Ca. Ca exists in each grain interior(21) of the fired product and each grain boundary(22) between the adjacent fired products. Pr exists in the grain boundary, thereby compacting a ceramic structure of the varistor element. An amount of the Ca is 0.2 atm % - 2.0 atm % in the grain interior of the fired product.
