Provided are processes for the production of Group II metal sulfide phosphors and precursors thereof which enable homogeneous introduction of an activator metal into phosphor particles and bring about improvement in the utilization efficiency of metals. A process for the production of Group II metal sulfide phosphor precursors, characterized by adding an aqueous solution containing a Group II element compound, a sulfurizing agent, and at least one compound containing any of copper, silver, manganese, gold and rare earth elements to an organic solvent to form a reaction mixed solution, heating the reaction mixed solution to cause the azeotropy of water and the organic solvent, and forming a target Group II metal sulfide in the reaction mixed solution while removing only water from the solution by recovering the water formed by condensing water vapor generated by the azeotropy.
