The invention relates to light-absorbing composite materials, in particular to a light-converting material which can be used in agriculture, medicine, biotechnology and the light industry. The inventive light-converting material comprises a matrix and at least one composite rare-earth compound, with a particle size ranging from 10 to 1000 nm, of general formula Mexa AybRzc, where x≥1.0≥ y≥0.0; a, b and c are the charge of Me, A and R ions. The composition for producing said light-converting material comprises a matrix and the above-mentioned composite rare-earth compound with theparticle size ranging from 10 to 1000 nm taken in a quantity ranging from 0.0001 to 10.0 mass%. A polymer film and fibre or an agent in the form of a varnish, cream or glue can be used as a matrix. The inventive light-converting material ensures the high light intensity and the low consumption of the rare-earth compound within the range of 0.0001 to 10.0 mass% of the material mass.
