This invention provides a packing material for a lithium battery, comprising a base material layer, and a first adhesive layer, an aluminum foil layer, a coating layer, an adhesive resin layer or a second adhesive layer, and a sealant layer stacked in that order on one side of the base material layer. The coating layer has a multilayer structure comprising a layer (A) comprising 100 parts by mass of a rare earth element oxide, 1 to 100 parts by mass of phosphoric acid or a salt of phosphoric acid added to the rare earth element oxide, and a layer (X) containing an anionic polymer and a crosslinking agent which can crosslink the anionic polymer.
