PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a building material excellent in dimensional stability and adsorbing performance of volatile organic substances such as acetaldehyde and formaldehyde while provided with moisture absorbing/releasing performance originally possessed by a calcium silicate hardened body, and to provide a method for producing the building material. ŽSOLUTION : This method for producing the building material comprises a step of forming a mixture containing pulverized matter of calcium silicate hardened body and water into a formed body, a step of hardening the formed body by carbonation reaction into a calcium silicate carbonated hardened body, and a step of re-hardening the hardened body by hydrothermal reaction. The building material is obtained by the production method. Alternatively, an aqueous solution of a water-soluble phosphoric acid-based compound is applied to the surface of the calcium silicate carbonated hardened body before the hydrothermal reaction, and then subjecting the hardened body to hydrothermal reaction, thereby synthesizing an apatite compound on the surface or in the surface layer of the hardened body while the hardened body is re-hardened.
