PURPOSE : A process for stabilizing thiophene derivatives is provided to inhibit color change or formation of secondary components of the compounds during storage, thereby showing purity enough to be further processed into high electroconductive thiophene after storage. CONSTITUTION : The thiophene derivatives are stabilized by treating thiophene derivatives represented by the formula(1) with basic compounds, wherein R^1 and R^2 are each independently hydrogen, optionally substituted C1-C20 alkyl group or C1-C20 oxyalkyl group which is optionally interposed by 1-5 oxygen atoms and/or sulfur atoms, or C1-C20 dioxyalkylene group or C1-C20 dioxyarylene group and the basic compound is alkali hydroxide or alkali-earth hydroxide, alkali aluminosilicate or alkali-earth aluminosilicate, main group metal oxide or transition metal oxide, or ion-exchange resin. © KIPO 2008
