PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a process for producing the material of a rare earth permanent magnet as an R-Fe-B based sintered magnet (R is more than one kinds selected from rare earth elements including Sc and Y) where the amount of Tb or Dy used is little.
SOLUTION : Under a state where powder containing 30 mass% or more of alloy composed of R2aTbMcAdHe (R2 is one kind or more than one kinds selected from rare earth elements including Sc and Y, T is Fe and/or Co, M is one kind or more than one kinds selected from Al, Cu, Zn, In, Si, P, S, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ga, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, Pd, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Hf, Ta and W, A is boron (B) and/or carbon (C), H is hydrogen, a-e are atomic ratios in percent of alloy satisfying following relations; 15≤a≤80, 0.1≤c≤15, 0≤d≤30, 0≤e≤(a×2.5), b is the remainder) and having average particle size of 100 μm or less are existing on the surface of a sintered magnet body composed of R1-Fe-B based composition (R1 is one kind or more than one kinds selected from rare earth elements including Sc and Y), the magnet body and the powder are heat treated at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the magnet body thus absorbing one kind or more than one kinds of R2 and T, M and A contained in the powder to the magnet body.
