PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection element, having a simple configuration which can be manufactured as a thick-film element on a substrate, can have low electrostatic capacity, has superior mechanical strength and heat radiation characteristics, has less influence due to shock, and can contribute to reduction in thickness and weight, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION : The ESD element is configured in such a way that an ESD protection film 12 formed of a composition powder paste containing ZnO as a main component, and a silicon carbide is printed between electrodes 16 and 18 on an insulating substrate 14. The ESD protecting film 12 is made of a composition powder containing ZnO as a main component and a silicon carbide and a composition containing Mn, Co, Bi, Sb or a rare earth element, and is made of a composition containing 10 wt.%-40 wt.% of silicon carbide for 100 wt.% of this composition. At least either of the patterns of a pair of electrodes 16, 18 sandwiching the ESD protection film 12 may be formed, to have a comb shape or to give a difference in pattern width.
