PURPOSE : A TBC(Thermal Barrier Coating) and a process for coating the same are provided to improve the performance of entire substrate-TBC system by modifying the properties of the substrate rather than modifying the ceramic materials of the TBC. CONSTITUTION : A process for applying a TBC(Thermal Barrier Coatings) on an article comprises the steps of applying a bond coat layer over at least one surface of the article, wherein the bond coat layer contains a bond coat material and at least one metal selected from magnesium, calcium, strontium, silicon, rare earth metal, group 3A and 4A of the periodic table(10, 12), oxidizing at least one metal to form at least one surface variation on the exposed surface of the bond coat layer and form a TGO(Thermally Grown Oxide) layer on the bond coating layer(14, 16), and applying a TBC layer on the thermally grown oxide layer to fabricate a coated article(18). © KIPO 2007
