PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high-hardness oxide-glass glass composition which, while having a high hardness even without containing a component effective for lowering melting point, such as PbO or Bi2O3, has a relatively low glass transition point and hence can be produced easily.
SOLUTION : The glass composition has a component composition consisting of B2O3, a transition metal oxide, and a rare earth oxide and has a Vickers hardness Hv of 600 kg/mm2 and a glass transition temperature Tg of 700°C or lower. Preferably the component composition by wt. ratio consists of 20-50 wt.% B2O3, 4-45 wt.% transition metal oxide, and 20-60 wt.% rare earth oxide.
