PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare gas discharge lamp lighting device in which change in illuminance stability is small and correction is easy even in the case surrounding temperature changes. SOLUTION : When an ON signal is input in a lamp ON/OFF control terminal 73, an electric power control circuit 70 starts movement, an electric power control element 30 is driven at a frequency corresponding to an oscillation frequency of an oscillation circuit 72, and the lamp 50 is lighted. Moreover, output of a detection circuit 60 is fed back to the electric power control circuit 70. A thermistor 23 in which a resistance value changes is installed in an oscillation constant circuit 20 so as to be thermally contacted with an exothermic element, and if the surrounding peripheral temperature of the lamp lighting circuit in starting lighting is simulatedly detected, oscillation frequency changes according to the temperature of the exothermic element. The rare gas discharge lamp can make illuminance stability constant by lighting the lamp at a low frequency when the surrounding temperature is low and by raising the frequency accompanied with the temperature rise, and can make the changes in illuminance stability smaller by controlling in the above.
