PURPOSE : A lithium ion secondary battery using a lithium composite oxide based on nickel or cobalt as a cathode active material is provided to obtain excellent cycle characteristics under a more practical condition including intermittent cycles. CONSTITUTION : A lithium ion secondary battery using a lithium composite oxide based on nickel or cobalt comprises a cathode(5) capable of lithium intercalation/deintercalation, an anode(6) capable of lithium intercalation/deintercalation and a non-aqueous electrolyte, wherein the cathode comprises active material particles, and the active material particles comprise a lithium composite oxide represented by the formula of LixM1-yLyO2 (wherein M is at least one element selected from Ni and Co; L is at least one element selected from alkaline earth elements, transition metal elements other than Ni and Co, rare earth elements, and Group IIIb and IVb elements; x ranges from 0.85 to 1.25; and y ranges from 0 to 0.50). The lithium composite oxide is treated with a coupling agent having a plurality of hydrolyzable groups, wherein the remaining hydrolyzable groups that are not bound to the lithium composite oxide are inactivated. © KIPO 2007
